Episode 7: The Saturday NWoBHM Show!

It's not a 'word'...it's an acronym.  It's fair to say that if you were a heavy rock band of any type between 79 and 86 from the UK, you could be tagged as NWoBHM at some point (and you also have license to tag yourself!) but that doesn't give what NWoBHM is any credit.

So, there was this "movement" called the New Wave of British Heavy Metal that was a "thing."  Lots of bands emerged from this "movement thing" and became famous, like Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, and the like.  Pretty soon, NWoBHM was a pleasant musical disease that had lots of ears turned around, including my own in the summer of 1982 when I picked up "The Friday Rock Show" compilation on BBC records and spent the rest of that summer trying to play Diamond Head's epic "Don't You Ever Leave" on my Gibson S1.  I still consider it one of the most impressionable riffs I've ever heard in my life.

This will be the first of many NWoBHM themed programmes, I'm sure.  To start out, I basically chose selections from two of my own favorite compilations.  The first 3 tracks are from the 1987 Prism comp "Metal City," the next 9 come from another Prism comp called "Metal Minded" that began life as a cassette-only Neat Records 'bonus' for the readers of Sounds Magazine in 1982 called "60 Minute Plus" that Neat pressed as an LP entitled "All Hell Let Loose" the following year.  My old friend Warren scrambled these two comps up on a cassette once, and that tape has always been one of my "go to" tapes over many years of working in machine shops, sheet metal fab shops, and warehouses.  Warren also lent his aid to my appreciation of the last two songs on the programme, so you might as well join me in raising a pint of Boddington's to good ol' Warren, a very very good friend.

If you have any comments or suggestions, here's the place to do it...or you can always follow me on the twitter, I'm @yoshiki89 so go for it.  Also, please consider following me on Mixlr...if you do, you'll be notified not only when the live broadcast is on, but also when the archive is posted, and whenever I decide to play records on the fly.  Thanks for listening!!

Without any further ado...show notes!  Timestamps are approximate.  PLAY LOUD or KNEEL AT TEA TIME!!  Heavy Metal is the LAW!!

This is GOLDSMITH...but it could really be any NWoBHM band, though
Prelude/Intro 0:00:00
Hammer and Anvil.  You can look that up.

VENOM "Bursting Out" 0:03:18
Originally recorded in 1981, and usually appearing as a bonus track on reissues of "Welcome to Hell." If Iron Maiden and their lot were considered the most famous of all NWoBHM bands, then VENOM was certainly the most infamous.  Many think that Venom put Neat Records on the map; this really isn't true but it's pretty damn close to the truth.

AVENGER "Under the Hammer" 0:06:18
This song also appeared on their 1985 "Killer Elite," and features Ian Swift on vocals, who was a member of Tysondog, Atomkraft, and Satan...a band that also featured NWoBHM legend Brian Ross, who also sang for AVENGER briefly and their work with him is typically better known.

SARACEN "We Have Arrived" 0:08:51
To think that such a fantastic song as this came from such a low point in the band's history...this was the album opener for 1984's "Change of Heart," an album that came following founding member Rob Brendelow's departure.  He is back in SARACEN today (with original vocalist Steve Bettney, featured here also) and the band is still active today.  "We Have Arrived" is now and always has been a totally goose-bump inducing klassic.

MC  0:13:07
Up the irons, though.  Sons of Tommy Vance.

STEEL "All Systems Go" 0:14:21
Not all NWoBHM bands ended up as productive and as revered as others, with this track we're starting to dig into some of the former.  STEEL gave us one 7" EP in 1981, from which this song (the B-side) is taken from.

GOLDSMITH "Give Me Your Love" 0:17:51
One demo, one single, and GOLDSMITH were finished in 1983 or so.  The band featured former members of Bitches Sin at one time or another, and like the mighty ARAGORN even though their catalog was sparse, years later enough material existed on tape to justify a nice retrospective compilation.  Now, these lyrics aren't the most profound ever (in fact, not very many NWoBHM klassics are known for their staunch poetic charge), and they might make you blush...but the riffs in this song make up for it, I think.

PERSIAN RISK "50,000 Stallions" 0:22:28
This was a compilation track only, and I sometimes honor this as a prime proto-power metal klassic.  After releasing their debut LP in 1986, vocalist Carl Sentance moved to the U.S.A. (he was replaced by Lou Taylor, don't get me started!) and eventually ended up singing for Krokus in the late 90s.  Oh yeah, some guy named Phil Campbell played in the band as well.
Persian Risk: 50,000 Stallions, and just as much #want

MC 0:27:16
Thanks for listening to the show!! Let's have a spot of tea!!

WHITE SPIRIT "Watch Out" 0:28:00
This was a compilation track only.  Janick Gers was in this band before he was in Iron Maiden.  WHITE SPIRIT are really fuckin' good.  Bruce Ruff is well known as their vocalist, but some say that this particular recording is the only material the original band ever tracked with Brian Howe, who sang for Ted Nugent and Bad Company later on.  It does get confusing.

DEDRINGER "Lucy" 0:32:37
This was a compilation track only.  I'm not sure why DEDRINGER are not metal enough for Metal Archives (but well, OK).

WARRIOR "Kansas City"0:35:08
Where NWoBHM was amazing at bringing so many bands into the light, many of the band names caused confusion due to not being so original...take WARRIOR, for instance.  OK, we shall cut them slack for the name of the band!  This band is better known for their klassic tune "Dead When It Comes To Love," the great title of that track more than makes up for the not-so-great name.  "Kansas City" is on the B-side of that single.

MC 0:38:15
If you're still listening...thanks a lot!

DEMON "Wonderland" 0:38:55
An early NWoBHM favorite of many, DEMON are better known (and more respected by the media) for their early 'evil' themed albums...they were really a multi-faceted band that covered a variety of musickal genres as well as lyrical themes, so much that the name of the band pretty much cast them in the eyes of many.  One of their best albums was 1985's "British Standard Approved," and "Wonderland" is from that album.  "BSA" was also the last DEMON album to feature songwriter/guitarist Mal Spooner, who passed away in 1984.

HELLANBACH "All The Way" 0:43:37
An updated version of this appears on their 1983 LP "Now Hear This," but this version was a comp track only.  Early promo folders touted HELLANBACH as "the new Van Halen," and it's true that their energy was very Halen-esque (if that's a thing at all) but they were different in many other ways.  Their albums are very impressive, for sure.
Hellanbach responds to unreasonable Van Halen comps by adding someone's 15-year-old brother to their lineup
JAGUAR "Dirty Tricks" 0:46:52
This was a compilation track only.  If Persian Risk laid a template for contemporary power metal with "50,000 Stallions" earlier in the programme, then JAGUAR did the same for speed metal with their signature rip-roaring fare, such as the popular "Axe Crazy," which is the fastest NWoBHM track I can think of (even faster than VENOM).  "Dirty Tricks" isn't about speed, it's about using your "honey," as they say in the song.

MC 0:51:19
Time enough for one more pint of Boddington's, and a couple more pints of metal...

TYTAN "Blind Men and Fools" 0:52:37
My goodness!  Can I add this to my list of favorite songs ever? ADD TO CART? Y!  Former Angel Witch members Kevin Riddles and Dave Dufort (Denise's brother) formed this band in 1981 with Steve Gibbs and the incredible Kal Swan on vocals (who sounds a little like Kevin Heybourne and Dave Tattum rolled into one).  This EP heralded the band's impending greatness...a greatness so great they split up in less than two years; their "Rough Justice" LP was released 2 years later in 1985.

ANGEL WITCH "Straight From Hell" 0:56:45
Speaking of ANGEL WITCH...here's Heybourne and Tattum from 1986's "Frontal Assault" LP.  Sure, you've heard the typical ANGEL WITCH standards on other NWoBHM comps, but nobody talks enough about the Killerwatt (Records) era, of which this is a part of.  I get some unusual eyebrows when I cite this as one of my favorite ANGEL WITCH songs, but it really is.  Every time I listen to this, I nearly pass out from delight when Kevin's vocal part comes in for the first time..."what if I don't make it?" ARGH.

Outro  1:02:46
Thanks for listening!!

Episode 6: Hardcore HÖLOCÄUST

This Episode got rolling a few weeks ago when my long-time pal Greg posted some photos of some kool HARDCORE records.  I thought it would be nice if sometime we all shared some time together while I played a stack of some of my favorite 7 inch EPs, so...here we are doing that very same thing.

If you have any comments or suggestions, here's the place to do it...you can follow me on Mixlr, or you can always follow me on the twitter, I'm @yoshiki89 so go for it.  Thanks for listening!!

Without any further ado...show notes!  Timestamps are approximate.  PLAY LOUD or SURRENDER your 40s.  In BATTLE there is no LAW!!

MISERY from the all-crust state of Minnesota...as young, loud, and snotty as they come
Prelude/Intro 0:00:00
Lonesome Rhodes, loaded for BEAR...

CONFRONTATION (USA/CA) "Dead Against The War" 1991 7" EP 0:03:10
Tribal War Records / Tribal War 01.  Not a lot of folks realized that the tracklist published on the cover is completely inaccurate.  Which is a completely PUNK ROCK thing to do.  The tracklist below is accurate, though. Great thrash a la crust, Matt Fisher from MINDROT was once a member of this band.
1. Social Disease
2. Squandered Lives
3. Plural Orthodox (Worship We)
4. Instrumentally Disturbed
5. Insurgence
6. Contortion

MC 0:14:55
40 ounces of malt liquor, 60 minutes of PUN CROCK

MISERY (USA/MN) "Born, Fed...Slaughtered" 1989 7" EP (1990 UK Reissue Version) 0:15:42
Under Siege Records / SRT 905 2502.  The reissue has an extra track that didn't appear on the original AYF version.  Even over 20 years later, these guys are so crusty I can hardly believe they were from MINNESOTA.
1. Born, Fed...Slaughtered
2. A Total Destruction
3. Falling of Darkness

COWBOY KILLERS (UK) "KKK Wives On Holiday" 1990 7" EP 0:24:57
Sound Pollution Records / Pollute 02.  This band was so outrageous...something you find yourself saying a lot about a lot of punk bands from the UK, but I always held this band in a very, very high regard.
1. KKK Wives On Holiday
2. Poor Me
3. Tick Tock

MC 0:31:12
#kVltstatus

CITIZENS ARREST (USA/NY) "A Light In The Darkness" 1990 7" EP 0:32:20
Wardance Records / War One. One of the greatest things about CITIZENS ARREST, is that every single picture you ever saw of THE BAND playing live, they looked as if they were fighting with the air and doing a very great job of kicking some ass. "One of the ALL TIME greats."
1. Serve And Protect
2. In The Distance
3. Fortress
4. A Light In The Darkness
5. Woodstock
6. Without Peace

BORN AGAINST...just about everything is akimbo
BORN AGAINST (USA/NY) 1990 7" EP 0:42:31
Vermiform Records / VMFM 1. What if I told you that I got this EP in the mail on the very same day I got the CITIZENS ARREST EP in the mail?  I can't tell you whatever happened to good old Rick from Paterson, NJ, but he always hooked me up with great stuff without my ever having to ask for it.
1. Half Mast
2. Xmas Eve
3. 9 Years Later
4. Born Again
5. Witness To A Rape

MC 0:53:36
INTOXICATE!!!

DOOM (UK) "Police Bastard" 1989 7" EP 0:55:22
AYF Records / AYF-3. One of the hardest working crust bands in the scene, especially during their peak.  There was a lot of eyeliner and manufactured drama at the time, and DOOM fell for none of that...nobody ever tried to disrespect them, either.
1. Relief Pt.2
2. Police Bastard
3. Diseased
4. Circles
5. Means To An End

Outro  1:03:15
Thanks for listening!!

Episode 5: 危ないI!! Japanese Metal MAYHEM!!

Tonight is JAPANESE METAL NIGHT; great Japanese klassics from yesterday, as well as more recently than yesterday...metal rules all, but the thing I found out about Japanese metal a long time ago is that there really is no such thing as "bad" Japanese metal...even when it appears an act is at their lowest, cheesiest, or most dysfunctional...they sound like a million bucks, 24/7/365.

This is the first installment of many randomly occurring similarly themed episodes I hope to be able to share with you...there's just too much great stuff to fit into one show, and some of these bands deserve more of a listen than just one song.  You shall see.

Episode 5 MixCloud (click here to listen to the archive of the broadcast)

This is FLATBACKER.  Be careful around them.

Prelude/Intro 0:00:00
Otosan.  Tommy Lee Jones.  PLATINUM EYEBROW.

LOUDNESS "Crazy Night" 0:02:42
From the 1985 "Thunder in the East" LP.  It's practically obligatory to open an hour-long audio dissertation on Japanese metal with LOUDNESS band, because it was their success in Europe (and later, the United States) that kind of helped get Japan beyond just freaked out about metal, and into absolutely totally freaked out about metal.  When that happened, we got a lot of these bands in return, so that was awesome.

FLATBACKER "Hard Blow" 0:06:43
From the 1985 "Senzo" LP.  Most people don't know that before they were E-Z-O, they were called something else and were one of the heaviest and darkest bands of the early Japanese wave.  It was hard to pick just one song for most (if not all) of the bands in tonight's episode, but it was hardest for FLATBACKER.

EARTHSHAKER "Kioku no naka" 0:09:23
From the 1984 "Fugitive" LP.  They weren't as heavy as some of their contemporaries, but they were still wildly brilliant...the key to their appeal, I believe, was the way they wore their Y&T influence as if it were a giant badge, the greatest badge in the universe.  A lot of people forget about Y&T when they think about metal, maybe you have as well...maybe EARTHSHAKER will remind you, then.

MC  0:12:37
Kyoji Yamamoto > Eddie Van Halen...sorry, but it's true.
...陰陽座 fdsasdf

BOW WOW "You're Mine" 0:15:04
From the 1982 "Warning From Stardust" LP.  See my comment above, but know that Kyoji was doing the "guitar hammering" thing before Eddie (but after Franz Zappa, truly inspired by him)...however, Kyoji is a lot more than just the guy who helped make a technique famous.  This LP is one of the greatest ever made, and Kyoji's guitar work and seriously intense vocals make it so.  I nearly just played the entire LP tonight and left the mic off.  I was that close.

WOLF "Running Forever" 0:18:21
From the 1987 Self-titled EP.  This act came around towards the end of the "full-on" phase of the Japanese metal wave but when they did, they did it tr00 and hard.  They are largely unrecognized for their compact period of greatness worldwide, and there are many other bands called WOLF to prove this.  However, in Japan there is only one WOLF that matters, and that's what counts.

X-RAY "Sexual Urge" 0:22:45
From the 1983 "Hard Section" LP.  X-RAY were a lot busier than most non-Japanese fans realize, but they were only busy for a few years and now enjoy "reunion fandom" as their reward (as do many of the acts from the 80s).  They were good looking lads, and had some interesting album covers as well:
See what I mean?

MC 0:26:53
You shall never return home, HA HA!!

SEIKIMA-II "Roh-ningyou no yakata" 0:28:47
From the 1986 "The End of the Century" LP.  Most gaijin see/hear this band for the first time, and think "OK, it's a Japanese version of KISS that sounds more like Iron Maiden" and well, that's like describing a delicious craft-brewed beer as "something made with water."  It would take me several hours to fully expose you to the majesty of SEIKIMA-II, and that would kind of still only scratch the surface and leave us all very tired.

ANTHEM "Bound to Break" 0:34:25
From the 1987 "Bound to Break" LP.  Eizo Sakamoto is probably the most well-known man in metal as far as the Japanese are concerned.  ANTHEM had a long and successful career with and without Sakamoto on vocals, but he always made his work count, no matter what band of project he was lending his talent to.

DEAD END "Phantom Nation"0:38:46
From the 1987 "Ghost of Romance" LP.  Another Japanese act that found its "big break" a record release in the U.S., but without the same effect LOUDNESS experienced; that's probably because DEAD END are a rather complicated, and amazing band (along the same lines as GASTUNK).  That's not saying that LOUDNESS aren't, but they are great at what they do, and what DEAD END does is very, very different.

MC 0:43:37
If you're still listening...thanks a lot!

ONMYOUZA "Kirameki" 0:45:28
From the 2002 "Kohjin Rasetsu" LP.  I said it in the show, and it's true.  My favorite metal band was MERCYFUL FATE for many, many years.  I heard ONMYOUZA and that was it, they took over and I've never looked back.  EVER.  The metal fan who has a similar brain as I do gets a little bit of everything here; dual guitar assault, different and exotic flavors, and complementary male and female vocals.  It doesn't get any better than ONMYOUZA.

陰陽座 ... they will take over your SOUL
SEX MACHINEGUNS "BURN ~ai no honoo wo moyase~" 0:49:35
From the 1998 "Sex Machinegun" LP.  Joke bands never seem to do well in English-speaking countries, mostly because our sense of humor is too literal and always taken at face value.  SEX MACHINEGUNS is a wildly successful band who despite numerous lineup changes, have maintained an aura of outrageous and truly side-splitting humorous approach that never distracts the listener from the wonderful things that are happening in their ears.  If you still aren't sure, tell me Anchang isn't one of the best guitarists and metal vocalists you've ever heard, and then you won't get it anyway!!

MC 0:54:06
Final anime holocaust, coming up...

ANIMETAL "Animetal" 0:56:39
From the 1996 "Animetal" Single.  More Eizo Sakamoto, and She-ja of VOLCANO, and Syu of GALNERYUS as well, and...you get the picture.  A Japanese "super-group," if you will, under Sakamoto's direction, that honor the theme songs of great Sentai/Hero/Super-Robot shows of his youth.  This is their first effort, and led the way to their popular "marathon" albums and exciting live performances.  In this medley, you will hear the theme songs of Gatchaman, Combattler V, Raideen, Casshern, Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, and Devilman...with Sakamoto's razor voice and totally blistering guitar sound!!

It's ANIMETAL, Sakamoto-san is not singing about chili
Outro  1:02:46
Thanks for listening!!

This was MAIMED...if their only demo doesn't burn your lips off...well...uh...
Prelude/Intro 0:00:00
Nothing left to the imagination...

NECRONY (SWE) "Severe Malignant Pustule" February 1991 Demo
A fantastic template for effective and precise grinding death metal; great friends of mine for many years (I transcribed guitar tabs for a few tracks on their "Necronycism: Distorting the Originals" all-cover CD released in 1994).
1. Intro: Ortuo 0:02:09
2. Masticator of a Swollen Carcass 0:02:56
3. Hill of Cadavers 0:06:20
4. Consuming Cartilage 0:09:26
5. Decomposing Genitals 0:13:04
6. Pus-bonum-et-lauda-bile 0:16:53
7. Severe Malignant Pustule 0:20:03
8. Outro: Ortni 0:23:09

MC 0:23:47
Solo KERTOFFEL < Potato Salad

MAIMED (USA/IL) 1991 Demo #1
A Chicago band so incredibly awesome, they completely self-imploded after only recording one demo and while on the verge of signing a deal with Peaceville Records.  A tr00 underground tragedy, yet counteracted by the beauty of this recorded work...INDÜLGE.
1. Cranial Embalment 0:24:59
2. Burned 0:28:21
3. Engulfed in Cysts 0:31:24
4. Of the Dead 0:34:43
5. Maimed Excisions 0:37:30

MC 0:41:01
#weirdbaseball

DEMIGOD (FIN) "Unholy Domain" 1991 Demo
There were a lot of bands called DEMIGOD, this one was the best.  For so long, they were the lords of Finnish death and in many ways, will always be.  Their debut LP was every bit as special as this was.
1. Perpetual Ascent (instrumental) 0:42:24
2. Anxiety 0:45:42
3. Reincarnation 0:50:22
4. Succumb to Dark 0:54:51

Outro  0:58:57

Episode 3: Heavy Metal Attack

Our first episode with a theme!  Some terrific and mostly rare metal klassics from the 80s.  I didn't have enough time to play everything I wanted to, so whatever didn't make it on the tape deck tonight, will show up again later.

If you have any comments or suggestions, here's the place to do it...or you can always follow me on the twitter, I'm @yoshiki89 so go for it.  Thanks for listening!!

Without any further ado...show notes!  Timestamps are approximate.  PLAY LOUD or GO TO THE JOHN.  Heavy Metal is the LAW!!

Episode 3 MixCloud (click here to listen to the archive of the broadcast)

Prelude/Intro 0:00:00
I think a lot about this kind of stuff...

NASTY SAVAGE (USA/FL) "Unchained Angel" 0:04:01
From the 1984 "Wage of Mayhem" demo.  One of the bands that wrote the rules on how underground bands should interact with their fans.  Also a great idea to smash TV sets on your chest.

BANSHEE (USA/MO) "Back Your Way" 0:07:23
From the 1986 "Cry In the Night" EP.  Maybe you don't know them, maybe you do...they released this EP on their own, released an LP that everybody forgot about on Atlantic Records, then vanished...but, they really are back...back your way; having released a new album in 2012.

GRIFFIN (USA/CA) "Submission" 0:11:38
From the 1984 "Flight of the Griffin" LP.  Shouldn't be any man Jack (or Jill) of ya that don't know Griffin.  R.I.P. "Yaz" (Mike Yastremski), who played guitar for the band on this LP before he joined Heathen.

MC  0:15:49
Shreddi confetti; spandex and bullet belt tourniquet...

RAW ENERGY (USA/OH) "White Stallion" 0:16:54
From the 1988 "White Stallion" Mini-LP.  I hope you enjoy this treasure, from the burning-metal guitar tone capital of the USA, Columbus, Ohio.  I could never make that up.

ION BRITTON (USA/NC) "Eat Metal" 0:21:42
From the 1987 "Eat Metal" EP.  They've been around since 1982, are amazingly still together, but this is their only release to date.  Ultra Dave's vocals are...juuuuuuust a bit outside.  I want you to EAT METAL, yeahhhhhh!!

VALHALLA (USA/PA) "Break of Darkness / Looking For the Light" 0:26:29
From the 1984 Self-titled EP.  There were a lot of bands called VALHALLA back in the day, this one will always be my favorite.

MC 0:32:38
You don't know it...but they came to rock YOU!

MANIAC (AUSTRIA) "You Don't Know It" 0:33:41
From the 1985 Self-titled LP.  There were a lot of bands called Maniac, but Austria's version released this amazing LP on Hot Blood Records.  That's what I call one-stop shopping.

BURN (SWE) "Burn in Fire" 0:38:07
From the 1983 Self-titled LP.  If you ever hear this record call out to you, as if it was saying "buy me," you would be foolish to ignore it.  Quite solid effort, here.

MIDNIGHT DARKNESS (GER) "Linefire"0:41:50
From the 1985 "Holding the Night" LP.  The final leg of a veritable triumvirate of essential metal albums.  That's one-two-three total klassics.

MC 0:46:34
If you're still listening...thanks a lot!

NORTHWIND (GRE) "Stop Sisyphus Stop" 0:47:37
From the 1987 "Mythology" LP.  Their second LP, this was a concept album about mythology.  It's only right and just that a band from Greece should take up this task, and only fair to admit that they do a fantastic job of it.

KNIGHTMARE II (USA/CA) "Crack The Whip" 0:51:13
From the 1985 "Death Do Us Part" EP.  The Rod!  What else do you need to know?  Other than 'what happened to Knightmare I?'

MC 0:54:34
So, what are you drinking?

SLAYER (USA/TX) "Final Holocaust" 0:55:43
From the 1983 "Prepare to Die" EP.  A lot of folks remember this "Slayer band" because of their having to change their name to "S.A. Slayer" because of the other "Slayer band."  Some also remember this band because Ron Jarzombek played for them, but not on this EP. I think tonight, we should remember vocalist Steve Cooper, who also briefly sang for Juggernaut as well as Narita (formerly known as the Mark Reale Project) and who died in 2006.

If you like something on the show, please, go buy it (if it's available).  If you own something on the show and don't want me to play it, please let me know.

Episode 2: Son of There is No Theme

After a few weeks of silence, I'm back.  I even re-broadcasted the first episode, fixed the strange echo-delay and as far as that goes...all is right with the world.  The link to the updated showreel is in Episode 1 Show Notes.

So this is "Son of There is No Theme," consider it part 2 of the first Episode, if you like.  I couldn't fit all of the songs I wanted to mix up in the first Episode, so assume that I meant to do this and make it a two-episode thing.

If you have any comments or suggestions, here's the place to do it...or you can always follow me on the twitter, I'm @yoshiki89 so go for it.

Without any further ado...show notes!  Timestamps are approximate.  PLAY LOUD or GO TO WORK (or, stay at work, if you're Justin...or drive around...or whatever).

Prelude/Intro 0:00:00
Don't ask me what the prelude music is...it's a secret with no basis.

MACABRE (USA/IL) "Acid Bath Vampire"
From the 2003 "Murder Metal" CD.  It's about John George Haigh.  Such great friends of mine from so long ago; but I do a very good impression of Nefarious' bass riff, you should hear it sometime.

MASTER (USA/IL) "Unknown Soldier"
From the 1985/1986 Unreleased Album (the 2003 From Beyond Productions official release).  The sound on the very first cassette of this I ever received (from Jim Plotkin) is still the best, but I love the clarity of this and present for your edification, my favorite MASTER song ever.  Paul Speckmann is MASTER.

SINDROME (USA/IL) "Rapture in Blood"
From the 1987 "Into The Halls of Exermination" demo (the original mix).  An interesting way to round out the opening "Chicago 3," as Chris Mittlebrun of MASTER also played for SINDROME for a while (but not on this recording).  Troy and Shaun were among the many great and fantastic Chicago folks we used to see hanging around at every show.

MC
Still here.  Top of the 9th, Giants 2-0.  Padres need a rally RIGHT NOW.

DOOM (JAPAN) "Killing Field..."
From the 1988 "Killing Field" Mini-LP.  One of the greatest and most complicated Japanese metal outfits ever (not sure if you saw what I did there). Koh Morita (RIP, 1963-1999) -who was sometimes known as "Pirarucu"- still blows me away, every time I hear him play.

FONDLECORPSE (NL) "Twice the Hate, Twice the Carnage"
From the 2007 "Blood and Popcorn" Mini-CD.  One of two phenomenal releases in a most memorable year for me, personally...the heartfelt homage to a bloody rainbow of metal style represented in this impresses me so very, very much.

SIEGE (USA/MA) "Drop Dead" / "Sad But True" / "Cold War"
From the 1984 "Drop Dead" demo/sessions (the 1994 Relapse Records official release) If you're going to get a tribute to Boston from me, here it is.  A band who has always been far too important to forget, even though they really haven't been with us for almost 30 years.  I don't count the reunion, without Kevin Mahoney (RIP, 1965-2011) on board, what's the use?

MC
Hint: there's another Boston drop, at the very end of the show...see if you can guess what it is and where it came from.  Send your answers to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm.

JIM JONES AND THE KOOL-ADE KIDS (USA/MI) "Creeping Brown Deth"
From the 1986 "Trust Me" LP.  For more reasons than one, another major influence of mine.  The interplay of the drums, the tractor-like presence of the bass, and the singed flesh-tone of the guitars bring me to a point of musickal ecstasy that cannot be measured.

SLAUGHTER (CAN) "Disintegrator/Incinerator"
From the 1987 "Strappado" LP.  Gods.  From Canada.  Dives.  Third Harmonic Dives.

AUTOPSY (USA/CA) "Twisted Mass of Burnt Decay"
From the 1991 "Mental Funeral" LP.  I remember I used to listen to music while at work as the manager of a convenient store, and I also remember doing my best to exercise caution as to what I was playing so I wouldn't freak customers out.  I exercised no caution on the day I received this advance tape and listened for the first time.

MC
If you're still listening...thanks a lot!

THERION (SWE) "A Suburb to Hell"
From the 1990 "Of Darkness..." LP.  This band has changed a lot, but this album was, to me, their finest hour.

CARNIVORE (USA/NY) "Technophobia"
From the 1987 "Retaliation" LP.  A tribute to Peter Steele (RIP 1962-2010), this album was his best work and the bass sound on it, second only to that of REPULSION.

KREATOR (GER) "Riot of Violence"
From the 1987 "Pleasure to Kill" LP.  But, of course.  What you don't know is that there is a valid connection between Kreator and Macabre, but I don't have the time or the space to explain it.

MC
No luck for the Padres tonight.  So, what are you drinking?

CARDIAC ARREST (USA/IL) "Make Them Die Slowly"
From the 2008 "Cadaverous Presence" CD.  I dedicated this one to Jim ".50 caliber drummer" Deabenderfer, and to the entire band: Adam, Tom, and Holland.  Great guys, and a prime example of how some folks take the pride of Chicago seriously.  I love it, love it ALL.

If you like something on the show, please, go buy it (if it's available).  If you own something on the show and don't want me to play it, please let me know.

Episode 1: There is No Theme

The first edition without an origin story.  I really hated those comics, but felt like later on, not knowing everything right up front was kind of kool.  That's the lede.

Welcome to the show, if you've found this you're lucky because I mentioned the incorrect URL at the end of the program.  Today's program has no theme, so I've selected some random essential and nearly-essential tracks to play, mumbled in between the sets, and wrapped it up with a bow.

If you have any comments or suggestions, here's the place to do it...or you can always follow me on the twitter, I'm @yoshiki89 so go for it.

Without any further ado...show notes!  Timestamps are approximate.  PLAY LOUD or GO TO SLEEP.

Intro 0:00:00
I had some technical difficulties out of the gate.  The beginning is a delicate time.

CASBAH (JAPAN) "Russian Roulette" 0:01:40
From the 1986 "Russian Roulette" 7" EP (also released as a demo).  Japanese, immortally fantastic.

KAVIAR KAVALIER (CZE) "Du Ekel Du" 0:08:40
From the 1996 "Klinik" CD.  Oh wow.

RIPPER (USA/TX) "Sinister Minister" 0:11:46
From the 1986 "...And the Dead Shall Rise" LP.  You know you love it.

MC 0:15:57
and yes, the order of "Du Ekel Du" and "Sinister Minister" were reversed accidentally, sorry about that...order in the show notes is the correct order.

HELLBASTARD (UK) "They Brought Death" 0:16:38
From the 1989 "They Brought Death" 7" EP.  Scruff gave me the pick he used during these sessions.  Well, that's what he told me he gave me.

NOCTURNUS (USA/FL) "Neolithic"
From the 1988 "The Science of Horror" demo.  If I had a top ten best demos of all time list, this one would be in it.  AS. CON. TNENTS. RIPT. PART. LANS. FORMS. MOVE. TO. SYYAAAAHH.

SEVERE WARNING (USA/OH) "Death to False Metal"
From the 1987 "Death to False Metal" demo.  Delicious.

MC 0:34.11
did I fart? not sure if serious

CRYPTICUS (USA/COL-NOR) "Beauty & Deceased" 0:35:25
From the 2012 "Dare to Enter, Die to Leave" Split CD w/Scaremaker, released on __ records.  If I had to hire a death metal band to play my birthday party, it would be CRYPTICUS.  They are amazing beyond the meager words that I can use to describe them.

ENERGY VAMPIRES (USA/IL) "Packing a Pistol" 0:38:27
From the 1991 "Energy Vampires" demo.  John Stewart was also the vocalist for the original line-up of SLAUTER XSTROYES, the best band from Chicago you may not have ever heard.  John lives in Las Vegas now, but he was much more than just a guy with an excellent voice and this demo proves it.

GASTUNK (JAPAN) "The Vanishing Signs" 0:42:05
From the 1986 "The Vanishing Signs" EP (also 2002 "Early Singles" compilation CD).  Mighty doesn't really do justice, ultra-mighty is perhaps better.

MC 0:46:45
if you're still listening, thanks

DEHUMANIZERS (USA/WA) "Kill Lou Guzzo" 0:49:31
From the 1986 "Kill Lou Guzzo" 7" EP.  If you don't think this is one of the most important records ever made, then I'm not sure how I can help you.  Maybe you just need to hear it again.

ASSÜCK (USA/FL) "Corners / Unrequited Blood / A Monument to Failure" 0:55:20
From the 1997 "Misery Index" LP.  It is useless to resist.  You will be assimilated.

MC 0:58:28
farewell, for now

FILTHY CHRISTIANS (SWE) "Party & Fight For Your Right?" 0:59:28
From the 1990 "Mean" LP.  They were the darlings of Earache Records for about 5 minutes, then they went their own way.  Their most recognizable track... I still marvel, really.

If you like something on the show, please, go buy it (if it's available).  If you own something on the show and don't want me to play it, please let me know.
